Change Leadership Symposium
Ross Auditorium (Alumni Hall)
Franklin University, downtown campus

Franklin University has launched a monthly Change Leadership Symposium that is open to the public.  Each event is built around two concurrent breakout sessions that incorporate interactive learning activities.

Breakout #1: Avoiding (or overcoming) Change Fatigue

The global business environment puts enormous pressure on organizations to adapt in order to remain viable and competitive.  However, top management either frequently fails to implement effective change initiatives or launches too many change endeavors resulting in significant organizational instability.  This sets the stage for passive-aggressive behavior toward change and/or burnout by followers from daily disruptions of unsettled change. The challenge is to sequence change initiatives leaving periods of stability for “resting” plus, individual and organizational growth between cycles.  This session will be facilitated by Dr. Tim Reymann.

Breakout #2: Alternate Leadership Models

The traditional Leader-Follower-Goal model of leadership fails to adequately explain group processes when leadership is shared or otherwise built into the self-managed governance structure.  This breakout session will be facilitated by Dr. Ross Wirth and covers collective leadership, the Direction-Alignment-Commitment model of leadership, and the leadership role played by internal networkers in organizational change.

To register: RSVP to Dr. Ross Wirth at wirthr@franklin.edu or 614-947-6128.

Registration fee payable at the door: $15 includes light dinner and symposium supplies.

Additional information is available at Symposium-Announcement (includes information on upcoming events)

Measuring Values: The Secret to Sustaining a High Employee Engagement Culture
Presenter: Tom Rausch, Leadership Beyond Limits, LLC
Today’s workforce wants their work to stand for something. Values are the underlying foundation of a meaningful workplace. An organization disconnected from its values will result in discontent, turnover, and unwelcome front page news reports about the organization. We reveal tools that support your ability to connect with the values of your employees at the organizational level and transform your culture into one that is not only desired by all stakeholders, but outperforms the competition. The Cultural Transformation Tools® developed by Barrett Values Centre bring hard measurement to “soft” values, the underlying driver of your business culture.

The intersections of Coaching and OD
Presented by Jessika Ferm, President, J.Ferm Corporate and Executive Development and
Peggy Marshall, Director of Coaching Strategy, Nationwide Financial Services
Coaching, with its focus on the individual, emphasizes establishing the interpersonal relationship with the ability to create trust, communicate, listen and utilize powerful questions. These competencies are also important for the OD practitioner.  However, coaching does not necessarily require the conceptual and theoretical organizational knowledge or the competencies required for the more complex dynamics of group and organization behavior that are required for OD….or does it?
Together, we explored the following questions and more:
• Where does consulting end and coaching begin?
• Is coaching a core competence of OD professionals, or something better left to coaching professionals?
• What are the similarities and differences between the two disciplines?
• What does the future hold for the relationship between coaching and OD?

Rapid redesign for Mergers and Acquisitions: Accelerating change through organization design
As organization development consultants we believe that change takes time and that engagement of impacted stakeholders is key to the success of any effort. But what if your organization or client doesn’t have time. What tradeoffs do you make and how do you help the organization or client prepare for the ramifications?

At 2008's Organization Design Forum, Todd Christian, Craig McGee, and Claudia Murphy presented a case study on a fast-paced organization design they conducted for a Nationwide business unit. At our upcoming CCODN meeting, Todd Christian will review the highlights of their presentation, focusing on the challenges, the approach, and the results.

In attending this presentation, you will gain/learn:
• A general overview of organization design and the methodology employed
• The impact of an accelerated design process on an organization
• The trade-offs made in balancing speed and rigor
• Structures/processes used for accelerating the decision-making process for the leadership team
